How to Backub Stock ROM using MTK Droid Tools

These are step by step instructions on how to backup stock ROM firmware using the MTK droid tools of Mediatek (MTK) Android device.

Things You will need for this guide:

  • A Windows PC
  • A working MTK device
  • Droid Tool
  • PdaNet
  • Your device should have at least 4GB free space (in some devices require over 10 GB free space).

Note: For newer Android versions which are run Lollipop and Above, MTK droid tools will not work for them. For newer Android versions use Miracle Box or tools like Wwr MTK + SP flash tool to create backup your firmware. These two methods do not require your device to be rooted.

Before installing a new stock ROM or rooting your device, you should backup your old ROM. Because if anything happens your device like soft bricked or dead after making modifications, you have a safe option to fall back on your old ROM.

How to use MTK Droid Tools to backup Stock ROM

Step 1: Download and extract MTK Droid Tool on your Windows computer.

Step 2: Download and extract PdaNet on your computer from the above link.

Step 3: Enable USB Debugging mode on your device. To Enable USB Debugging on your device: Settings > Developer > Tick USB Debugging.

Step 4: Connect your device to the computer using a USB cable (Make sure USB Debugging mode is enabled before connecting it to PC).

Step 5: Now Install the PdaNet on your computer (make sure your device to be connected to pc with USB Debugging mode is enabled during installing PdaNet).

Step 6: During installation, a Phone Selection window will open, select Other in this window from the list of devices.

Step 7: Once PdaNet installation is completed, you will see a “drivers successfully installed” message.

Step 8: Now Launch the MTK droid tools as Administrator. After a few seconds, your device info should be displayed.

Step 9: Now Click the “Backup” button, the process will start, and you can see a progress bar in the tool window. Wait a few minutes to complete the process.

Step 10: If you get a prompt “Packing backup?” question during the process, select No.

Step 11: Once the backup is complete, don’t close MTK droid tools window. Open the MTK droid tools folder > Backups > your phone’s folder named In my case, I used Tecno_H5_backup… note this as the ‘Backup folder’ because we will mention it further.

Step 12: Go back on MTK droid tools window and click on the “To prepare blocks for Flash Tool“.

Step 13: After click “To prepare blocks for Flash Tool”, a window will open automatically, now navigate to the Backup folder (as mentioned above) select the md5 file here and click “open“.

Step 14: Now you can see it will start copying some items in the tool window, wait till copying is complete.

Step 15: Once copying is complete, go to the backup folder, and there you will find a folder name as “!Files to flash“.

Step 16: Keep the Both files well as a safe backup of your phones’ firmware stock ROM. !files to flash folder and the x_backup folder (which contains the !files to flash folder) are your phone’s MediaTek backup.

Additional Information:

Note: This method requires a rooted smartphone so your phone’s firmware backup will also be routed. MTK Droid Tool works on MediaTek smartphone only; It will not work for other chipset devices.

Help: Let me know via comment below if you are stuck anywhere in the process of backup your phone’s MTK backup. For this tutorial, I used Tecno H5 smartphone runs on Android v4.2 (Jelly Bean). I would look forward to hearing about your experience in the comment section below.

Alternative Tool: There are many tools available to create a backup of MediaTek firmware, like Miracle Box, Wwr MTK tool, and SP flash tool which is known as Smartphone flash tool. But SP flash tool is the best tool that we suggest to MediaTek users to backup their phone’s firmware or Flash their MTK devices with it.
